Give the kid a 4-stroke
XRCass, Jerseyboy, Acid Gloves
After checking out the sand tracks north of OVT the previous weekend (another CQ wanted to practice dropping/picking up his new DRZ without an audience) I decided to call a ride on the sat. Jerseyboy and Eddie were the only takers and since Acid Gloves doesn't throw up any dust at all the numbers were good for a dust free ride. Stopped by OVT 0745 and found a parking spot but no stragglers to be seen so I skipped the usual OVT bottle shop morning coffee and headed to the meet spot for Jerseyboy. There is a butt load of construction going on this end of the world ATM so a little bitumen was required. Jerseyboy turned up on a KTM500 that he had bought the day before and not yet ridden. Something about it being prepped for/raced at finke with lots of stickers with peoples names, bike shops, sponsors etc as well as blingy orange bits everywhere. Ok this gets interesting. I had only ever seen Jerseyboy on a 2 smoker. We decided to just take turns with the navigating (which also meant I get to be up front for a bit!). The tracks were in great condition and anything that resembled a fire break must have been graded at some point over summer so most of the whooped out sections were sandy straights. Jerseyboy decided the upper gears of a 4-stroke in some good flowing sand is now his happy place - and once the roos stopped crossing in front of us we were able to cover some ground fairly fast and hit the dunes we were aiming for. Took a couple of vids of Jerseyboy in the dunes and vice versa and went 4wd dodging on the beach for a bit. The seabreeze kept the bikes cool no worries and once you get moving out of the ruts the beach was the place to be. A breather was in order before a couple of hill climbs on the way back. Found the hills no worries and it looks like some others having been hitting steeper and steeper tracks. 2 hills for me was enough while Jerseyboy did about half a dozen or more so I had time to grab a few pics/vids. The downhills are now more challenging with hidden rocks and holes and I chickened out and found another way down on one of them after stalling the bike and nearly losing it. Yep time to go me thinks. Cheers Jerseyboy for the ride. |
