I called this ride to pay Homage to all those that have sweated, fallen, hurt and simply knackered themselves in the old Crusty proving grounds.
Well Homage was well and truly given today in the form of Blood, Sweat and Tears.
16 turned up which I knew would be a challenge in the hot dry and dusty conditions. After leaving the OVT 10min later we regrouped. Pounce states that after I rounded the 1st corner all he could see was a cloud of dust. A sign of things to come perhaps?
After the man eating super whoops we came out on to the MXer nirvana. White sand and jumps everywhere. We are enduro riders so skirted around the base with the culmination being a climb to the top. This hill highlighted a few things.
1. If your bike isnt geared correctly you may as well try to push poo up the same hill.
2. An XR250 doesnt have a power band to help get you to the top.
3. If your battery isnt up to scratch not even 400cc of DRZ power will get you to the top.
The boys tried a few times but exhaustion got the better and I got them to the top. Pounce Mick and Pete towed the drz to flat ground to bump start and we were all going again. A quick road section to the southern start of the Quinns coastal strip and we were on. This sorted the men from the boys and the experienced sandgropers from the rest. After the 1st hill climb I remember sitting at the top and seeing 3 corner men spread out about 2km, yep this is what its all about.
Another hour on and a few boys were struggling, a very hard 1st ride with the Crusties. An offer of a short cut back to the road and on to the cars was taken. I led the boys out and on to the cars they went. Well done boys and hope to see you on future rides.
A quick stop at the windmills which are no longer there and further north we go. After skirting the waste water treatment plant and onto the mother of all hills. It was long, steep and consisted of sand, sand and some more sand. With 14 left, 10 or so had a go with some carnage half way up. Laughter and cheers were heard; yep this is what its all about.
We ventured further north onto the Alkimos sand dune where the elusive sand Pounce was seen in the distance. We regrouped for a photo. The boys were looking shattered at this stage so inland I headed. I asked Fueltanker to lead us on some nice single trail he has cut and onto the Lagoon for lunch and hydration.
After lunch, drinks and a full rebuild of a KTM we were off to the tanks. A customary bag of snakes were shared with a couple of the boys heading home via the blacktop. Fueltanker lead us again onto some single trail culminating in the only way forward a mother of a steep hill with natural limestone steps in the right places to stop forward momentum. Yep it stopped me twice. 3 got to the top the rest were swearing and carrying on further down the hill. We all turned around and made our way out to the road. I was on reserve others were totally shagged so a combination of road and tracks were taken back to the OVT.
The boys who left the tanks early were already sharing a beer when the rest of us joined in. By the stories that followed I think most of us had our best ride right there. In the beer garden, under the huge gum trees with the boys flanked by 3 or 4 bikes, yep this is what its all about.

Kevo
Got home alright, would like to say in one piece but did a good number on my knee on that last stack. Cheers for the memorable day, sure won't be forgetting it in a long time.
Thanks to all those that kept helping me, I really appreciate it and thanks for the awesome ride. Will definitely be back for another ride once I recover but will be avoiding the sand ha!.

Mick
Great ride today Wrex, a ride in the sand around Alkimos usually sorts em out.
As KLXPete said, F^%k this is hard me bikes boiling and I'm over this.
We had some fun hill climbs, whoops, dust, a few interesting off's (Deano's KTM parked upside down) lunch at Yanchep Lagoon & beers at the OVT just to cap of a great days ride.

Allen
I've said it before, & there's a good chance I'll say it again...
I love sandy whoops & will ride up there again.
Thanks for the ride Wrex and co.

Tommy
I hate soft sand but this is WA so have to get used to it. I did have fun today and hope to see the new guys out for another ride they arnt all this hard. Well lead Wrex and helpers up front it was interesting at the back helping pick bikes all morning alls well that ends well and any ride that starts and finishes at a pub I am in for that CHEERS all Tommy.

Ross
hanks Wrex,Tommy Mick and Allan. Enjoyed the ride today around the old crustys stompin ground. They must of been harder than us new breed of crustys to ride that area all the time. I'm off for to get my hair done a massage and a nice warm bath.

Phil
Thanks for the ride today guys. I was pretty knackered by the last track of the day. The black top and pub were a welcome relief :) Thanks Wrex, Tommy, Mick and Alan for leading/sweeping. Great job sweeping in the dust with so much stop/start. Thanks to the guys that helped pull me out of a couple of holes and picked up my bike after I stacked it on the track after the tanks.

Todd
Thanks Wrex and the boys, a good thrash in the sand always cleans the cobwebs out of bike and body, those hill climbs should be hertage listed with the national trust, loved um,and there were a few entertaining tumbles down them too, a dam shame they,ll be flaterned soon for more bricks and mortar, nice view from up there, good country all round....cheers

Pounce.
Highlights from yesterday would have to be...
Kevo on the XR250 tank slapping in front of me but not coming off. He did it again in front of Allen & came down hard that time. Putting the XR into a nice corner drift but it just seemed to keep going & ended in a dust cloud. (pics 3453, 54, 55)
Watching Damo come over that blind hill & having the front wheel dig in then him going over the bars. As I was walking over to maybe help, Deano came over at speed, heavy on the front brakes then upside down landing on Damo's bike (see mentioned pic 3459)
Lots of guys trying the hills & not succeeding, making it, not being able to come down them, just general fun.
Wrex having a go at one, flipping the WR but without letting go, spun it around on the back wheel & saved it.
Allens new bit of single trail, that was sweet to ride.

Now Kevo tried his hardest to get SOTD from shear numbers, poor bloke spent a lot of time on the ground, but Deanos has to be it from my point of view.

Here's a short video of BillyBob on the first hillclimb.
