With another trip to Gero presenting itself the weekend after the Mullewa Pony Express, who better to call for a Midwest ride than Merv.

Fancy a quick trip to Horricks Merv?

Yep, Im in.

Bewty.

Sunday morning was pencilled in and a quick post failed to recruit anyone else (apart from Acid Gloves) so we were on our own.

As luck would have it, a Saturday arvo down poor gave the sandy tracks some good grippy moisture to make life easier.

A good serve of B&E Sunday morning was just what the doctor ordered after a session of chilli mussels and EB the night before.

Feeling 97% good to go we headed off from Sunset car park to start our assault on the dunes.

The track was awesome, plenty of moisture in the sand, the sharp bumps smoothed off by the rain and we were flying, until we hit Oakajee.

The river was flowing through, there was huge wash outs either side, time to flip a coin to see the best way to cross.

Merv was the brave one to chance it and he made it look easy. Honestly, I didnt wish hed wash out one bit!

Off through the dunes we rode watching out for other bikes as there was fresh tracks left earlier. We happened upon them just shy of Buller river and they offered us some great advise. Cross nearer to the ocean as the river runs deep. Cheers mate!

Another taste of sea water saw us plow through the river meets ocean track and we were off again.

The track seemed to dry out the further north we ran and it made the woops a touch more tiresome.

In true crusty fashion, we just dropped it a cog and ploughed through.

Up came Bowes river, the one we thought would be most challenging. A quick evaluation turned us toward the ocean side of the river and we passed through it piece of piss! Wicked, weve got Horricks in our sights now.

Weaving through a slightly over grown track got us to our destination, then we rewarded ourselves with the best curry pie (Old Diggers brand I think) and a coke and reflected the journey so far. Paradise.

Fuelled up ready for the return trip (made sure Merv had fuel) off we set for the home run.

Was a touch easier given we knew the tricks to the crossings, just had to get past those tiresome woops.

Back at Buller we headed for a back track behind the dunes. An interesting crossing was easily passed only drawing up to the foot pegs in water and we shot off up the hill.

We ducked and weaved the single trail looking out for any new washouts or erosion trails only to be stopped by....... caution tape! What the?

Turns out that some archaeological dig was going on as someone had happened across some bones on the track. Apparently this sort of find was not unusual, especially after some heavy rains and trail riders were common discoverers of these sites. Whoever said trail bikers were a nuisance?

The guys there allowed us to pass through and we were all but home.

A quick play on the firm bumps that was sunset finished an awesome Sunday ride with virtually no incidents. Nothing to nominate SOTD anyway.
