Wrex wrecked em Part 2

Riders: Wrex, Azza, DRZSteve, WaynoVB, Jeff 400

So wrex put the call out for a OVT ride, perfect I reckon enough rain during the week should make for pretty good conditions up in the sand. There was a few rides on the weekend – Adventure Rally and Tommy’s 99th up in the hills. So everyone’s spaced out across Sandgroper land this weekend. Al and Mick are noticely absent, fans of the white stuff, thought they have done a Pounce and avoided whoopy sand at all cost, but no appearance at Tommy’s aswell. No worries, plenty of riding to be had….we’ve had good rain early should be a good season this year…we’ll see.

It’s a nice fresh easterly up there makes a nice change from the summer heat, you know its not going to be hot but we’ll get punished by the sand anyways. Pub’s not open yet so we might as well go for a ride. Wrexy is back in full flight, acting like a clown, a few gruesome ambo stories to set the scene. Talkin to Toddy the other day and we’ve agreed there’s really only two rules to remember for motorcycling and two rules only. Rule # 1 is to stay upright and Rule # 2 is to not forget Rule # 1. The worlds full of good intentions… see how we go. At least it’s a pretty soft landing up there. No time to dwell on this palava, were off!!

Wrexy is determined to make it Wreckem part 2 so he takes us straight out on about 5 kms of deep sandy whoops…just to get the blood pumping. It’s a ‘pace yourself’ ‘don’t death grip the grips’ ride up there as it usually is a very long day, but we’re all hangin on like a vice on this bit. But the sand is damp and fast and we all make it to the first regroup no dramas.

Next is a nice sandy hill, about 50m not too steep, but starts on a left hand bend. Wrex shows us how its done and hits the first 1/3 of the hill nice’n’fast and promptly perches on the top ready for some carnage. Get up all right, so does Steve (plenty of power on the new wr450)…lack of momentum stops azza and wayno, so its turn around have another crack.

Plenty of hills, sandy sweepers, speedway action….awesome riding….5 of us so the flow is good and everyone’s havin a ball. Azza was nearly a no go… the bed was comfy, but he’s glad and can’t wipe the smile off. Wayno’s tennis elbow is causing a bit of grief, but he’s a trooper and carries on in trusty sweep position.

I’m second and see Wrexy at the top of a hill surrounded by scrub, he’s looking left and right like McKenna running out of the backline….this’ll be fun…so give it the berries and join Wrexy at the top also start scanning like windscreen wipers. There’s only one way out and it’s through a 3 foot deep viney swampy quagmire. No dramas pick a alright line though the jungle and amazingly get the old girl out. No such luck for Steve, he’s digging a hole that just keeps getting bigger….there’s a blue machine and a rider in there somewhere. Wayne and azza are smarter and stay on the firm stuff. Wrexy does a superman (no bike, just himself) into the vines…Steve bunny hops the clutch…the three of us pull the Yam out. Greenery is spooled around just about every part of the bike. Nice spot for a breather…overlooking an awesome ocean, nice and sunny.

We end up heading north, refuel, head north again, wicked riding and then its back inland a bit….10 km run out to the main road is a killer, tests the fitness to keep the beast going fast on top of the sand. See a few 4x4’s out there also living it up.

All pretty bushwacked so wrexy takes us to the shelters then promises an easy run back. This doesn’t sound too bad but turns out the opposite….loggers have chewed up the tracks and generously left pine branches like pick-up-sticks for as long as the eye can see. That sorts us right out.

Almost home, we’ve done prob 100 kms, and I’m feelin it. Note to self, 5 inch black poly pipe is about 1000 times more slippery than a pine log. It wont give any traction at all. I give wayne and steve a lesson in this. Then its in and out of a hole that goes at right angles, I feel better because steve is now nearly upside down.

Quick hardpack rocky powerline run home and it’s a cleanser and a laugh over azzas videos. Cheers fellas awesome ride and thanks Wrexy…nice work…can’t wait for part 3.
