The good thing about adventure riding is you have the tools to go almost anywhere. As if the lack of tools would keep a Crusty from a destination.

Six players turned up at the Rock Inn. Some ideas were bounced around about power lines and dirt tracks

Tommy had a track marked skirting the dams. It was decided to head south and see what happened.

Sharing the lead between Tommy, Mick and Pounce, the group followed a superb mix of tracks past dams, rivers, farmland and some excellent bulk rubbish piles.

I had attached some very expensive panniers to the DR and copped a ribbing about their contents. I can assure the group that the contents returned dry and in one piece. Unfortunately one of the fridges stopped working and the beer was Kimberly cool.

To keep the blood sugars at their optimum we stopped at a quiet small local business to have lunch. OK a counter meal at the pub. Boddington, I believe.

Heading north this time, just when you think the riding couldn’t be any better Ross “nailed it”.
A roofing nail about as far from a roof as you could get. In the Crusty fashion the ratio of people doing the tyre changing and sweating and swearing to people standing around, giving advice and thoughtful hints was two to four. Jacko took command and with a polished technique had the tube out in moments.

Using exactly no tools from the very useful Tenere tool kit, the tube was patched and returned to service. If you want to adjust the suspension or tighten the rear spring then you have the tools but to remove the rear wheel……not a hope. Well done Yamaha!
The search for the power lines was successful and five of us slipped and slid down the track to the amusement of Pounce containing a smug look on the DRZ.

If you sit the 2012 DR next to the 1980s XT and it makes you think the Suzuki design team have been taking some long lunch breaks.

It was getting dark so the decision was made to head up the bitumen. The extra heat on the Tenere’s tyre worked the patch loose and tyre change 2.
This patch held on the gravel and again worked loose outside the Rock Inn. Convenient.
An awesome days ride concluded as it had started…in the dark.
Thanks lads for an excellent day.
