Dazza’s New Year Hills fest.
Players for 2/1/13 were Laurie, Brett, Juddy, Glyn, DazzaM and KtmShaun. Brett has been for a run at Woky with Wayno previously but otherwise a couple of newbies to Crusty’s.
Great call from Dazza for a new year’s ride. Dazza was keen to get the new Husaberg 450 out amongst it after trading in the 350. Thanks mate as it was bloody great to get out amongst it after the sedentary festive season. We rocked up at the parking spot thinking there was just three, then Juddy, Brett and Laurie rocked up. Some really top riders these three blokes which gives an amateur like me a chance to pick up some tips.
We got going with Juddy taking the lead. We then proceeded to look for every downhill and gnarly uphill in this area of which Juddy knows them well. More hills on this ride than I knew were there! A bit of single trail mixed in and it was bloody good. No riding for a while for me means the arm pump was massive on some of the faster uphill stuff.
Dazza lead us out into some areas Juddy had not been before and from memory after being there just a couple of times managed to find the good trails which is a great effort.
Laurie burnt out the clutch on one of the steeper hills. The rest got up to a point ¾ the way up the slope and then lost the trail as it just petered out. Juddy got Laurie’s bike in a fair enough condition to get him going again but new clutch will be required.
On another hill my bike overheated just slightly near the top. Juddy provided some entertainment by high siding it at walking pace whilst turning around on the side of the bank to lead off in the other direction. Probably the only time he put the bike down all day.
We only did 55kms but it felt like 120. We were out for nearly 4 ½ hours with only short stops but all the uphill’s and downhill’s combined with the higher daytime temperatures means it certainly showed up our ride fitness for some of us. I was stuffed after. We all went through all the water in our camelbacks before the end of the ride.
Also had a couple of creek/river crossings which had a steep bank on the other side. The only line to take to getup and over had a tree sitting there so we had to haul the bikes through.
6 rider’s means it flowed well. No riders lost as we got the hang of the cornerman system. A good cool breeze was around most of the day keeping the temp down a bit and helping with the dust. Great day to get out into for 2014 and a great bunch of blokes to start off with.
Cheers KtmShaun.
