Peak Charles 2 Day Ride 21/22-06-2014

As mentioned in my last post, things did not go according to plan for the Ravy Club on this ride. It started on Saturday morning when we are all lined up ready to go when two riders found out that they had issues with their bikes, so we all had to wait while they fixed them (very frustrating). Finally we got going and it didn’t take too long to find out that dust was going to be a problem on this ride, and the wind blowing was very strong and cold.
On Saturday’s ride, the strong wind and dust was making visibility on some tracks very hard to see and bringing a couple of riders unstuck and with one of them having to take a trip to the local hospital. The tracks were mainly open fire trails and following fence lines around farms and crossing salt lakes. There were a few other dramas during the day but we all made it back to camp. Sitting around a camp fire is always enjoyable but after a day of fighting a strong wind and sucking up dust it wasn’t going to be a late night. But while some rain during the day would have been good, it certainly came down that night. Luckily the tents didn’t get blown away.
Sunday we woke to a nice morning but it was freezing cold and by the time we had packed up and got ready to hit the trails, the wind had picked up again and was just a strong as Saturday but colder. After the first hour of riding everyone was putting on extra clothes or jackets. The tracks were the same as Saturday but more variety with some really nice sections of trail. Everyone was taking it a bit easier as nobody wanted to see another rider carted off to hospital, but it wasn’t to be with a rider hitting a tree and getting severely concussed. They got him to a support 4WD and off to hospital.
The rest of us made it back all good. As I said before, during the ride there were other issues that the Club had to deal with, that spoilt the ride but they are a good Club and will look at what went wrong and get it sorted. Last two years that I have been on the ride I’ve had a great time and will be back again next year for another Peak Charles ride.
Cheers for Steve and Kyron for coming along for the ride. I have posted some photos
