Trail Report: September 10th 2000

Players: Jaw, Tim, Mik, Brad, Ben, Darrin
Venue: Alkimos and Yanchep
Rider of the Day: Mik - Back and ever impressive.
Stack of the Day: Brad - "Wearing" the DT in
Breakages & Injuries: Ben - cracked rear sprocket retainer, DNF

Report: A big turnout with a record number of 6 players. JAW had worked frantically on the hog for most of Saturday and Sunday morning to get Mik back in action - a bit of welding both outside *and* inside the engine with the final startup just before players began to arrive. A close call.

Okay so he looks ungamely, but that powerhouse pair packs a punch

Visitors/newbies for the day included Ben sporting his "wild" 1980 TS250 and Darrin "runs on coca-cola" 1995 CR250. A welcome return to Mik, out of the game for 9 months straight away picking up rider of the day simply by showing just how well he can handle a really, really crappy bike.

Hitting the track the team went straight to the circuit for a few laps. With only Tim and JAW being the most recent "regulars" the others quietly circled for a while sussing out the competition. JAW siezed upon the oppurtunity and gathered the lads together for a photo shoot, hey guys, gotta have some pictures to post on the trail report page...

Has the photo been taken yet?

The warmup was complete after a brief stopover at the Alkimos, and the lads headed back to the ranch for a refuel - those that needed it anyway.

At that stage the race was on to Yanchep. Hard rides were put in by all players. Notable mention goes to Tim for managing to stay upright for the whole event (although some would argue that means he's just not trying) and to Darrin who effortlessly took on all that he saw. I think there is something to be said for starting trailbikin' early on in life.

Who said that people take it easy of road on a brand new registered bike?

Things started to heat up by the time Pippidinny road was passed.

Stack of the day was earned by Brad on his brand-new-never-been-off-road DT175. Quoting Mik who was following at the time: "I swerved when I saw a bike flying out of a cloud of dust - I knew there had to be a body in there somewhere."

Unpeturbed Brad dusted himself off, noted that the DT is of a rugged design with not so much as a scratch and then preceded to have a similar stack a few km's down the track.

There was great contention at the obligatory drag race on the last straight before Yanchep. So much that a rerun was called. Drag racing on sandy limestone is an interesting affair. Tim and Darrin used sheer 2 stroke 250 power to spin their way to the lead, the CR250 proving unbeatable by the KX250 over ~400m. JAW on the XR250 stood spinning at the line but once traction was found managed third place. Both Mik and Ben on the "boongers" found reasonable traction off the line put just didn't have the pulling power. The DT175 showed good form off the line but was unable to find enough torque to catch the leaders managing only fourth leaving the TS250 fifth.

Meantime pulling up the rear Mik on the hog found that a golf ball sized rock launched by a CR250 directly at a knee cap can be a painful experience. The Hog, having road bike gearing may yet be a dark horse in offroad drag racing, but not this time; Mik pulling over and rubbing his knee furouisly.

Darrin Carvin'

61km measured the day's distance travelled marred only by one DNF, Ben on the TS250. Troubled already by auto-unscrewing bolts on the rear sprocket, the TS decided enough was enough and spat a large chunk of the sprocket retainer out the back bringing his show to a halt. Not finishing is always annoying as the 4WD rescuers have to be brought in, but at least a full ride was accomplished before terminal failure. "Not a problem, I'll see you next event" ;)

An excellent ride with all players looking forward to the next monthly event.
