Trail Report: August 11th 2002

Players: Al, Brad, JAW, Rob, Simon
Venue: Alkimos and Yanchep
Rider of the Day: Brad - you been practisin' mate? ;)
Stack of the Day: Not awarded
Breakages & Injuries: None

Report:

Since the last event there had been several minor get togethers by various players but finally 3 Crusty Quinns Diehards managed to be available on the same day; 3 players or more always means an official meet ;)

However, "Simon" had found the messageboard and, also being a Perth northen suburbs lad, was keen to get out and join the fun as well. 2 o'clock is the scheduled meet time and the 3 players head out for the rendezvous.

While waiting, the team bumps into Geoff out with another gang of riders. There is no shortage of riders - or 4x4s - must be the glorious Perth "winter" weather ;)

Simon is found, introductions are had, off to Alkimos. JAW hangs back with Simon, nursing his rolled ankle from a previous week's efforts but also to give him a few riding tips. Simon hasn't been in the saddle for a long time, and has never ridden sand, and is riding his brand spanker 2002 XR400. This combination can only result in one thing: a number of ungraceful stops ;)

JAW offers the key advice - get up on the pegs, power out of trouble, look where you want to be not at the ground in front of you - and Simon is picking it up pretty quick. By the time they reach the time trial he is knackered and heads back with a Rob escort. Keep up the practise Simon, and break that new girl in gently - not too much hard revving ;)

Brad takes out Rider of the day.

Meantime JAW and Brad hoon around the Alkimos waiting for Rob. There are a lot of 4x4s out at the Alkimos too, seems everyone is in the mood for some off road action, and why not.

Up on top of the Alkimos hill is a regular visitor, Mr 60 Series. Every Sunday, without fail, he parks his car, listens to the CBs and "watches the crazies" in their 4x4s. We've all yarned to him at some stage - he is another one of the colourful characters that makes the scene what it is.

Also on top of the Alkimos the lads catch up with Al. "How you going mate?" "Yeah good." <insert some bike talk> "Say, you wanna join us for a blatt up to Yanchep?" "Yeah, why not" ;)

Al is obviously pretty good, with a nice KTM520 to match. The lads put on a good run to Yanchep down the "easy road" and it looks like Al is pretty much hanging back - that he has a bit more available if he needed it...

On the home track towards Alkimos.

After a rest at the Yanchep Tanks the lads pack it in and head back to Alkimos. JAW puts Brad and Al out in front and is pretty happy to give Brad Rider of the Day. After a fair bit of earlier trash talk Brad has come through with the goods, he's slowly drifting into the distance as JAW tries to keep up, to no avail. He'd use something like "stuffed ankle" but Brad would just say "excuses excuses." ;)

After a hard run down the beach.

Al makes the call back at Alkimos to do the beach run home. The others agree.

Cubes are good for the beach. Al, JAW and Rob all have plenty of cubes and hook the bikes up hard near the waterline and open 'em right out. Once you reach the point where the wheel is on top of the ground - rather than digging it's way through the ground - it's easy going for the big thumpers. That doesn't mean you can relax, you never know where the water and wind has created a drop off or an air pocket; it can be quite treaturous.

Al had already done the beach run on the way up and said that the tide was out and the beach was flat and nice. He was right - and excellent run. Was also good to see the TTR250 keeping up with the big boys, although we all know Brad that you must have been on the throttle stop the entire distance ;)

The lads part ways on Marmion ave and another successful "impromtu official meet" is over. Bring on the next meet!
