February is traditionally a hot month and usually a bit to dry and hot to go bike riding so it was decided to call a CQ family camping trip. After much deliberation and a half hour of surfing the net, the location that was selected was Lane Poole Reserve just out of Dwellingup. Half of the group traveled down on Friday and set up camp at Nanga Mills. The rest followed down Saturday morning. It is a big camp ground with a nice flowing stream and within walking distance of a large swimming hole. The ladies were also happy as it also had a loo.
Friday afternoon was taken up pitching tents and organizing the evening meal. Although a quiet night, there were plenty of laughs, a bit of drinking and a late bed time. We were up early Saturday morning to feast on a traditional Aussie BBQ breakfast and coffees. Pete was pretty annoyed when Steve woke him at about 7.30 to get him moving. Pete's normal wake time is about 10.00. The rest of the happy campers arrived late morning, set up camp and the whole group headed off to explore the area on foot, finding a good crop of blackberry plants, some sweet goat trails and a nice deep section of the river for a swim.
The riding down that way looks tops but of course is out of bounds except for the gazetted roads. We did see a few guys kitted up and out riding but these is plenty of rangers around.
Lanes Poole is a large area with several day and overnight camping areas only a few k's from Dwellingup. It is heavily wooded with some nice river, lots of facilities, mountain bike and walker's trails as well as canoeing and even white water rafting in the winter. It cost $6.50 per adult a night to camp down there and is well worth the 1.5 hour trip from the Northern suburbs.
Saturday night was a big cook up all together and then just really sitting around taking the piss out of each other. Most of us had a shower using the solar shower in the open but course the photos tell a better story. Steve drank 8 cans of bourbon and got a bit maggoted. He told little Col he loved him as he was going off to bed. To top it off he then told Big Col the same thing..
Sunday morning things moved a little slower as everyone relaxed a bit more. Another big cook up was had (That's why you go camping), an hour or so was spent sitting around chatting and drinking coffees before the camp was packed up. The group then moved around to Baden Powell day area for another big swim and a morning relaxing under the shade of a large tree.
We had a great weekend away and I sure will head down that way again. The kids had a ball and the area is pretty child safe.
