Ring of Death Ride
Ring of Death Ride
Calling it was Col, just a quick blast back before 12 ride, have the Crusty Quinns Xmas get together later the evening. In all five of us answered the call to join Col, meeting up the off road carpark at 7.45am (in future this time should be 9.00am). To start the day Col gave the crew the brief: Corner man system explained - Check Heading out to Cataby, fuel up loop what along to the best track ever - same as the week before - Check Watch out for the drop offs - Check Watch out for roos - Told us the story of how a few years back along the best track ever one of the Crusty Crew was taken out by a roo - Check So off we went under Col's lead, with Choko sweeping and three newbies and one virgin. Headed out to the first sentry post, where we made a right and headed inland, a few k's up the road we regrouped at the begining of the first track, nice and smooth. Racing up the first hill, alittle bit a launch ah that's what Col meant about the drop-offs. Murray found out that pressing the red buttom really does stop the bike. The run along this track was fun with a few little jumps, I think next time we should double back and have a crack when you know whats on the onther side. Regrouping at the end of this run, we were feeling pretty good, all we had to do was cross the highway and race down to Cataby. A quick five minute run we were under the fence over the highway under the fence and regrouping for the run into Cataby. With some words from our leader Col, its a straight run through, hit top gear and open her up, no corner man required on this run. Nice 20k's of fast sand track. Hitting Cataby for a refuel, we had a nice supprise, you've heard the story, you've read the report, now meet the man. That's right, "I don't need a soccer ball to header when I can use a roo instead" Colin. He told us there was a 20k ride along a gravel track until we get to the best track out, but we had to watch out for roos, since that was where he was taken out. No worries looking forward to give this a wrap. We all regrouped at the start of this best track ever, keeping a watchful eye out for roos (who was I kidding I didn't see more than a couple by this stage) we were cruising along at pace. Col in front, Adrain, Paul, me, Murray and Choko sweeping when I came along Col, who had suddenly stopped in the middle of the track. I notice his headlight looking abit worse for wear and long skid mark (on the ground) - I've hit roo was Col response. The roo had jumped out in front Col, he collected the roo with the front, stopping Col dead in his tracks and sending over the front with his bike cart wheelling down the track. It should be around here somewhere, we fan out, to find this roo just off the track. Looking not too happy about his situation we all hoped that it was just shocked and a bit battered and bruised and would soon be on his way. However that wasn't the case and it was decided to do the right thing finish it off (the roo that is not Col). Back on the bikes, our leader had slowed the pace a bit, we had reach the turn around spot for the Crusty Speed trails, where Col had another near miss with another roo. Our leader was broken, the fear had cascaded down though the ranks, roos where every where, no longer in ones and twos but packs of five or six. Hidding under bushes near the track waiting to jump out, waiting to extract their revenge for the loss of one of their own. With no second in command to releive Col of command and lead the assult back to Lano the pace slowed down with bums on seats we headed back to Lano. A quick 130k loop, back by noon, great tracks, fun by all (except the roo). Great loop to do over again (love to try it the rain). I'm not to sure who calls the ROTD and SOTD, but for my 2 cents Col gets STOD and Paul and Adrian get KOTD (new category). Cheers kpphotos |
