Tommy had foolishly been watching the Dakar on TV and thought if they can race in over 46c then what was stopping us having a ride this Sat?

And the idea of Tommys Dakar began.

So be at the Lakes R H 08:00 this Sat then off to park spot for a ride was the order.

A few Crustys turned up at the Lakes Road house , then another, and still another. 19 players in all. (I think) Tommys quiet weekend ride just became a bit noisier.

We drove East to find some quiet, ecologically friendly riding area. The dust on the track in was a warning that nobody headed.

The first bivouac looked about right with a mob of crusty bikers. I couldnt find Cyril Despres but I thought I saw Marc Coma.

After checking out Ashs new Jeep we headed for some sweet tacks with Mick450 doing sweep duties. The other Dakar may be cutting out sections due to water but the entrants in Tommys Dakar are so tough that they got:

: No backup crews ( The trailer Seano turned up with looked like he had a million dollar crew)
: No rest days (however I saw a Husqvarna rider having a little lay down at one stage)
: No Kamaz trucks (Thank God)

Fortunately the weather was mild and the riders skilled. Tommy navigated the group through some rocky hill climbs, bringing out the cameras. You cant do anything on a ride without someone collecting a digital image of your pain as can be seen by the gallery this week.

The meanest hill was a snotty, slippery, dusty hill that went on forever. Wayno and some other skilled riders made it look easy. Others brought the cameras out again. From the top the view looked just like SBS Dakar as riders took different lines crossing each others paths or using others as traction. Funny stuff!

The best joke was yet to come when Mick450 yelled, Hes taking us back down that hill, there is going to be carnage!

And he did.to my amazement.no carnage on the decend.skill!

Some of the tracks showed evidence of the wet season and show what a community service the riders are doing keeping these tracks open for emergency workers.

Just when you thought it was time to rest, Tommy would take off and connect up another section of outstanding single track. At this stage I thought for a second how I volunteered to help Mick out with sweeping. One look at the dust cloud near the back and I got over that guilty feeling quickly.

Tommy also showed us that just because you are leading the ride doesnt mean you have to be in front as he explored canyons left and right for even better terrain. What a dedicated leader.

(NB no remarks about reverse gear)

I saw some great riding and avoided falling off, getting hurt and narrowly escaped getting run over by the sweep.

A good safe Dakar was had by all. Mainly because of the NO TRUCKS rule.

Nice work.

SOTD by popular demand Slo Dave for his hill dismount.
